We are into the third quarter of 2018 and the news of high-profile cybersecurity breaches doesn't seem to slow down at any given point of time. Data breaches on are the rise but that still won't force companies to up their cybersecurity game.

As on July 2nd, 2018, the number of data breaches identified by the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) were around 668 total data breaches that comprised more than 22.4 million records (22,408,258 to be precise).

Meanwhile the cost of cyber-crime is up and there's no slowing down. Worldwide cyber crime now costs an estimated $600 billion USD a year. Even the average cost of a data breach has increased.

The global average cost of a data breach is up 6.4 percent over the previous year to $3.86 million. The average cost for each lost or stolen record containing sensitive and confidential information also increased by 4.8 percent year over year to $148.

A joint report by IBM Security and the Ponemon Institute, show that the costs are the highest in the U.S. with the average incident coming with a price tag of $7.91 million. Although one may assume that such leaks are always caused by criminal activity, 25 percent of the cases examined were actually due to human error.
